Why Parolu exists

Parolu started with a simple idea: what matters is how much you can understand, remember, and say—not how much time you spend in the app.
That’s why Parolu combines a thoughtfully structured course, memory science, practice in context, smart reviews, and AI. It all serves one goal: language you can actually use and keep for the long term.
I’ve always found it strange that people can spend years learning a language and still aren't able to use it. So I created Parolu to turn learning time into language you can actually use.

Where the idea came from
It started with the everyday frustrations of learning a language.
Apps make it easier to start and practise every day. But after a while, questions creep in: What am I actually learning? Why was a good answer rejected? Why am I repeating a card because of a harmless typo? And what comes after the next thousand sentences?
The more you already know, the more annoying this gets. A good synonym is marked wrong, a different grammatical form gets highlighted in red with no explanation, and an endless stream of sentences never quite adds up to speaking more freely.
That’s why Parolu exists: every lesson, answer, hint, and review should move you towards something concrete you want to say or understand.

Who’s behind it
Built by someone who has spent years making products—and has always had a soft spot for languages.
Paweł Lipiński is a polyglot who has been passionate about languages for as long as he can remember. Polish is his mother tongue; he is equally comfortable in English and can communicate in Danish, German, and Spanish. Along the way, he has also learned Russian and Esperanto. What fascinates him most is how languages really work—not only at the syntactic and semantic levels, but also in how learning a new language opens up a whole new way of understanding people and cultures. He is especially interested in how the nuances and shades of meaning within a language influence the way people think and who they are.
Add more than 20 years of building products, software, and companies, plus university study in computer science, AI, and data mining. Parolu grew out of that combination: a product that notices nuance, explains things well, and leads you through a coherent course instead of a random collection of exercises.

In practice, that comes down to six simple principles.
Research, not learning fads
What we know about second-language learning, memory, and active recall shapes the material, practice, and reviews.
Learning, not keeping score
Progress means language you can remember and use. Your pace, prior knowledge, and memory matter more than points, streaks, or time in the app.
Course first, flashcards second
Every word and sentence has a place in the course. You know why you are learning it and what skill it will help you build.
Recall at the right moment
You type language from memory in meaningful sentences, get audio and an explanation, and see the material again when it is worth reinforcing.
Precision without nitpicking
Synonyms, grammar, and context matter. But a harmless typo should not leave you repeating the same card forever.
AI should help, not show off
AI helps build courses, understand answers, and explain nuance. But it works inside a real curriculum and with quality checks.
A different path
No chasing streaks. No random stream of sentences.
Duolingo, Clozemaster, and Lingvist can all be useful. Parolu simply focuses on something different.
Less gaming, more real learning
Points, streaks, and characters can make it easier to come back. Parolu is calmer: each session follows the course and what is worth reviewing right now. There is more typing from memory, more recall, and more understanding of why an answer works.
More than common words dropped into sentences
Clozemaster and Lingvist are good for practising vocabulary in sentences. Parolu adds a complete, structured course. Material is included because it helps you communicate and fits what you learn before and after—not just because a word is common.
A good answer does not always look the same
Parolu does not mark every different answer as wrong. Simple checks handle harmless spelling and punctuation differences, while AI can judge meaning in context, tell close meanings apart, and explain a grammar problem.
Why use AI
AI works best when it has a good plan.
Today’s language models can work with context and nuance at a scale older apps could only dream of. Parolu uses them where they genuinely help you learn—but the course still has a clear structure and goal.

AI isn’t left on its own. It gets the course structure and clear instructions, and generated content goes through quality checks. It is a tool—the learning plan still decides where and why to use it.
